Marketing Analytics Intern

Elise Frankera graduated in 2019 from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in statistics. After taking some time off, Elise enrolled in a two-year master's degree program in statistics at CSU East Bay, and will be graduating this school year.

After her previous internship ended, Elise started applying to new analytics internships through job sites. Having just finished a role that was data science and tech heavy, Elise focused on finding an internship with more exposure to people. One San Francisco based company—Dolby Laboratories—responded to her application. After two weeks of communicating with Dolby, and going through three interviews, Elise was offered a marketing analytics intern position!

Dolby Laboratories is an audio technology company that sits at the intersection of tech and entertainment. Many products they sell are made for film, music, and gaming production companies.

What earned her the role?

Elise attributes earning her current role to previous intern experience along with her own personality.

  • Her first internship right out of university was for a cyber security company called Carbon Black. A referral helped her secure a sales analytics intern position.

  • Her second internship was for a well-known cloud computing company called VMWare. In order to get a business analyst internship there, Elise sent out hundreds of applications on job sites.

These two experiences were significant in Dolby’s decision to reach out to her, but from Elise’s perspective, her personality during interviews played a major role.

In total, Elise has experienced job hunting from three different perspectives: 1) Having a referral 2) Sending out literally hundreds of applications through job sites 3) Having enough job experience to attract responses from companies within ~10 applications.

What she does:

Elise’s marketing analytics internship is situated on a team that focuses on tracking website and social analytics.

The first half of her role consists of an ongoing social media analysis that Dolby calls “social listening”. Essentially, Elise combs through different social media channels to find any content that is related to Dolby. By collecting this content, Elise can figure out which Dolby posts, topics, products, initiatives, or marketing campaigns are doing well based on their engagement.

  • In order to do this efficiently, Elise uses a specific Dolby program that allows her to create queries using specific key words. Once those keywords are entered, Dolby’s program pulls up every related post that exists publicly on the internet.

  • This tool makes it easier for Elise to gather data from one place as opposed to doing it manually.

The second half of her role has to do with website analytics. To give an example, if Dolby Laboratories is running a specific marketing campaign to drive customers to a specific webpage, Elise would need to figure out if the campaign is effective.

  • She does this by watching Dolby’s website traffic. If a campaign starts on a specific date, Elise will track website metrics near that date.

  • Some metrics include how much time people spend on webpages and how many people are visiting Dolby's sites. Elise’s team can then use this data to push certain products or announcements on web pages that are receiving the most attention.

📢Advice from Elise:

  • “I think the main thing is being genuine to yourself. If you don’t know something, say you don’t know something. Of course you want to showcase yourself in the best light, but all employers value honesty, and people can tell when you’re being disingenuous. So stay true to yourself as much as you can because that reflects in everything that you do!” —Elise Frankera
