Jen Santillan

Influencer Marketing Intern

Jen Santillan

Jen Santillan is a junior at University of the Pacific pursuing a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

In the spring of her sophomore year, Jen sent out ~25 applications to marketing positions on LinkedIn with fingers tightly crossed. FIVE Years Apart—a marketing agency based out of Florida—saw her application and asked for an interview. This process, from the moment she applied to the day she received the position, took ~3 weeks.

What earned her the role?

  • FIVE Years Apart was most interested in Jen's history of volunteering and communication experience. Specifically, Jen wrote blog posts for a magazine in highschool, was a social media intern for her university, and is part of a sorority.

  • Her extroverted and energized personality during the interview also played a large role (Jen said this was half of what got her hired!).

What she does:

Jen was one of five interns on the influencer marketing team at FIVE Years Apart. Her main work included constructing creator rosters, marketing decks, and campaigns for clients.

  • Their clients are small brands/companies trying to grow a social media presence (just think of accounts at 3-15k followers).

Jen and her team worked on every stage of a campaign together remotely with Zoom.

  • Campaigns are marketing plans that FIVE Years Apart makes for their clients.

Using Grin (a software designed for influencer marketing), Jen constructed creator rosters by keeping detailed profiles of social media creators she found.

  • Creator rosters are designed to find the best creators for promoting a clients' brand/company

Jen also helped build marketing/campaign decks that were used to showcase services and plans to clients (interns were presenting to clients over Zoom!).

  • For example, in Zoom calls with Jimbo & Jules (a real client of theirs), Jen would take on different roles each time. Duties such as presenting slides, facilitating meetings, or taking extensive notes were split between interns.

📢Advice from Jen:

  • "A lot of people like to say this, but it's true—step out of your comfort zone...talk to people that are in the workforce already, interview them, and shadow them. Also, come prepared as always...you want to know what you're going to say next, what you're going to do next, but if that's not in your thoughts, just go with the flow and it will end up right for you." —Jen Santillan
