Interning for Disruptive with Jack Menghini

Good morning. The 49ers QB, Brock Purdy, has disappointed everyone with a lackluster performance on Sunday against the Browns. Some say it was just a bad game, but I say it was because he lacks awesome brand partnerships from sports agencies like Disruptive.

Find out how Jack Menghini scored an internship with Disruptive Sports Agency, what he did in that role, and what you can do to earn one too.

Jack Menghini

Marketing Intern

Jack is a senior at Loyola Marymount University studying business administration and marketing. With graduation right around the corner, Jack is filling his time with every activity under the sun. He gyms, bikes, plays soccer, plays beach volleyball, jams out on his guitar, and even sings at open mic nights. On top of all of that, he recently completed an internship as a marketing intern for an agency.

Disruptive is a new, minority owned sports agency that deals with professional athletes and top brands. If that sentence was a bunch of jargon to you, let me break it down. Sports agencies are companies that connect athletes looking to represent brands, with brands looking to have exposure in sports. Disruptive adds another layer to their business by only connecting athletes with brands that align with their personality and interests. So basically, Disruptive wouldn’t allow Brock Purdy to be sponsored by Champion since that’s a winner’s brand, and he just lost to the Browns…

What earned him the role @Disruptive?

Jack’s been passionate about sports since he was a kid. After having sent somewhere north of 70 applications on LinkedIn, Jack found a marketing intern listing for Disruptive Sports Agency and knew he had to apply.

On paper, Jack had prior experience at a legal office, in retail, and at a hotel. It wasn’t the most directly applicable experience for a marketing intern position, but he did get exposed to marketing concepts while in those roles.

One aspect of Jack’s resume that helped him was an Instagram account he had grown to 4k followers back in 2016. His @amazing.visualz account featured epic NFL artwork from various independent artists. Although the account has been inactive for years, it showed Disruptive his capacity for content creation.

During his interview, Jack was tested on his sports knowledge through general conversation and “player analogies”. The analogies were an exercise that made Jack think about which hypothetical athletes would go well with which brands and for what reasons. Given his background in sports and interest in marketing, Jack passed with flying colors and secured the role.

What a marketing intern @Disruptive does:

Jack’s work revolved around three major areas: 1) Research, 2) Talking with clients, and 3) Helping to build player kits.

Research

For certain athletes that Disruptive was working with, Jack would be tasked with researching said athlete and coming up with lists of brands he thought were viable partners. Once brands were identified, Jack would also directly reach out via email and other tools to try and get some business going. That’s pretty involved for being an intern.

Talking with Clients

Almost every “client” of Disruptive Sports Agency is a pro NFL athlete. Disruptive is in charge of communicating their marketing campaign ideas to these athletes so that it never becomes corporate bullsh*t. Given a need to chat with their athletes, Disruptive had Jack conduct calls with them on a frequent basis. During a call, Jack might spend time asking what direction an athlete wants Disruptive to move towards, or what an athlete thinks of certain campaign ideas. Obviously, Jack had to defer certain conversations to his boss, but for the most part, he had a lot of responsibility in those calls.

Player Kits

Behind the scenes, Jack was working on building individual player kits that are sent to clients annually. The goal of this project was to have athletes feel good about being with Disruptive while talking about the agency and enjoying the loot. Jack had to think about what kinds of gifts NFL players would like, and then contact companies to see if they’d want to be part of these player kits. 📢Advice from Jack:

You know yourself the best. Do what you believe in. Don't let anyone say you can't do something.

Build off of a passion you have, regardless of your experience. Regardless of that, I would still go for it. And if you really believe it, you can make it happen. It's doable.

I would also say to put yourself out there as well. Try going out, going to meet someone new, just going out and conversing and asking deeper questions to see what makes people tick. Try to learn more and just be super open-minded with what comes towards you.
